Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals. Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

Hi there, Amy - I wanted to update you. Firstly, I filed an extension with NY to give more time to resolve this issue. My employer sent a corrected W2 (in the shape of a W2-c form, with 1 number in all boxes 18-20) and I went back in and revised the information to reflect the corrected information, and attempted to refile. Unfortunately Turbo Tax still rejected it citing a 'data mismatch'. There seems to be an issue with the automated system, so nothing I put in these boxes seems to make a difference. Is there anything else I can do to file electronically, for example by deleting and starting over for State (Federal is already filed) - or do I need to resort to mail filing? If filing by mail, I would appreciate any advice - for example, do I mail both the W2 and the W2-c? I've never filed by mail before (been filing with no problem through TurboTax for 8+ years), so am anxious to get this right so we can receive our refund (TurboTax tells me we are owed $1200 for state taxes). Thank you in advance for your help!

I am afraid this is not a Microsoft issue. As I have already mentioned in my earlier post there are umpteen examples where vendors support their software backward compatible with Window 7 and even XP. Supporting an older OS that is not being updated should be easy. It simply boils down to money. Perhaps Intuit will reconsider its strategy weighing how important is it to retain long-time existing customers.

I use a combination of excel and prior year TT version (desktop - not sure online allows this), to run a couple of estimates during the year, just need to allow for changes in tax laws so deductions/limits are slightly different eg 401K/HSA, but gets close enough using prior year software. You can also do final tax table calculation manually in excel if needed. You can model a W2 based on pay statement and estimate final withholding etc; you’ll need to estimate interest and dividends - most brokerages provide tools to project income based on current holdings but won’t project reinvestment from bond maturities so you have to allow for that etc. Once you have a baseline AGI and tax, you can start plugging in hypothetical 1099-R or cap gains into TT to see the effective tax rates for those and where you may trip up e.g. triggering 3.8% NIIT. There may be other tax tools that are available more timely for 2025 limits/brackets. Navigating the estimate tax safe harbor depends on your situation as to whether you can use 100% of 2024 and then timing and amount of cap gains or Roth conversion doesn’t matter penalty-wise but may be an overpayment. You can also start out with that method and reduce estimated tax later in the year once situation is clearer, as overpayment in earlier quarters will eliminate underpayment later but you can’t eliminate an underpayment earlier by overpaying later. Personally I did a Roth conversion last year so I paid more ES in Q4 and filed with AI method and was able to eliminate the penalty but found it a lot of extra work (need to do state also). This year I expect my situation to be stable so I’m just keeping it simple and doing 100% of 2024 ES and then doing Roth conversion now instead of Q4.

So as BillM223 notes, TT does not to test the age of the filer when an HSA rollover is done and transferred to the CA state version. He shows the Windows version interview way to fix in his helpful answer, but with the Mac version that does not work so I had to go into forms and add the rollover amount to line 2 of 3805P to cancel the error and used exception 12 (in the end, before filing). Also reached out to the CA FTB and they indicated it is an error in TT and that it should be fixed, but TT does not have a portal to report errors that I can find.

Yes, the business is a partnership and yes there is an amount in box 14 and it is positive. I also indicated that I actively participated in the business. I've got the worn dry hands and bad back to prove it, haha (jk). But why would TurboTax not accept this info? The code is B for box 14, is that the problem?

Thanks again for your help. Is there any way to report this to Intuit so they fix it? Prior years have had people report this issue in the forum. I contacted the CA FTB and they said that the form should not have been generated on my return and to contact the software maker (and that 12 was the right exception as you noted). But Inuit doesn't seem to offer that, and apparently does not comb the forum for experts (like you) who reply to questions and acknowledge bugs.

This is a Microsoft decision/issue, win10 support ends in Oct 2025, Intuit cannot be expected to develop and support software on an unsupported O/S that is also no longer getting security updates. If your hardware can’t take Win 11 it’s time to upgrade; other third parties like Adobe etc will also stop providing updates. I went thru this with Mac OS, upgraded 8-year old hardware last year, which I consider a good run - it is what it is unfortunately.

If the IRS requested that you verify your identity, they certainly have your tax return. They would not have requested identity verification if they did not have your tax return. It can take an average of nine weeks after verifying your identity to receive your refund. Keep watching the IRS refund site for information. TurboTax does not receive any information after you file your return.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

Did you have a tax due or refund? You never noticed you didn't get it or paid it? If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late. You have 3 years to file for a refund.

I have a K-1 which includes a Statement A QBI Pass-through Entity Reporting. The schedule A has an enrty for 1065 line 22 and then 8 aditional entries from MLPs, 9 total entries. Should each one of these be entered separately on a line Z or should they be manually totaled up and then entered? Each entry has values in various boxes of the scheule.

Did you e-file? Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”
When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first one will say that your return was submitted. The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected. If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here? (Allow 24 - 48 hours after acceptance to look)
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
Or does your account say “Ready to Mail?” Or “Rejected?” Or “Printed?”
Note: If it says “Rejected,” “Ready to Mail” or “Printed” that means YOU have to mail it yourself. TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.
If you realize now that your return was not e-filed successfully, then you will need to file it by mail. E-filing is permanently closed for past year returns. You will need to print the return, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.

I have been very satisfied with Turbo Tax for many years so became lax following up on them. I find with my 2024 tax filing that 2023 was not filed. Hindsight being 20/20 I need to take care of submitting 2023 Tax Return. I prefer that Turbo Tax make this right by submitting it since they have all the information and sent me a thank you and Many Happy Returns April 2024. Shame on me for taking that as their end of the filing was completed. If I have to file a paper return for 2023 I request my Turbo Tax payment be returned to me and if there are extra costs of filing late I request that be covered by them also. How might this be addressed?
