Thanks for the response. I missed the deadline since I did not get the entire 401k closed in the 2024 tax year. Part of it was closed in 2025; I thought I had a calendar year. That's what I got for being my own "tax advisor" for this literally once in a lifetime event! I will try your suggestion later in the day. Thanks again!

The Clean Vehicle Credit comes with income limitations for who can claim it. Eligibility is based on the lesser of your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for the year that the new clean vehicle was placed in service or for the preceding year. The limits are:
if your filing status is Married Filing Jointly: Your MAGI can’t exceed $300,000
if your filing status is Head of Household: Your MAGI can’t exceed $225,000
if your filing status is Single or Married Filing Separately: Your MAGI can’t exceed $150,000
The qualified energy-saving equipment covered by the Residential Clean Energy Credit includes:
solar-powered equipment that generates electricity or heats water
solar power storage equipment with a capacity of at least 3 kilowatt hours (kWh) is required.
qualifying installation and labor costs
The tax credit doesn't apply for systems that you lease or for systems that you use to heat a swimming pool or hot tub.
This tax credit is non-refundable. It can offset your income tax liability dollar-for-dollar, but any excess credit won’t be refunded.
However, if the credit exceeds your tax liability for the year, you can deduct the unused portion in future years so long as the credit remains in effect
For more information, please read this TurboTax article: Federal Tax Credit for Residential Solar Energy
"If you purchase EV charging equipment for your principal residence, you may be eligible for a tax credit for the charging station.
This credit is 30% of the cost of 1) the EV charging port, 2) components and parts that are essential to the operation of the charging port, and 3) labor for constructing and installing the charger, up to $1,000.
A credit in the same amount is also available for energy storage associated with the home charger."

No, rollovers do not affect your AGI unless the rollover goes to a Roth account (if that is what you mean by "non-traditional").

No, You can't choose which tax years to apply your carryover to.
Carryovers from this year's return must be applied to next year's.
What is a capital loss carryover?

Actually, Line 33 should be the smaller of Line 20 (total tax amount) or Line 32. This line should not be blank, as it's the amount of tax TurboTax calculated on Form 1040, Line 16, plus any amount on Line 17.
If you're using TurboTax Desktop, if there's no amount on Form 1116, Line 20, check Line 16 and 17 on your Form 1040 and enter that amount. Then Line 33 on Form 1116 will have that amount also.
If you're using TurboTax Online, clear your Cache and Cookies first. Then you could delete Form 1116, and step through the interview for Foreign Tax Credit again to repopulate it. Here's How to Delete Forms in TurboTax Online.
I haven't encountered this same error, but with TurboTax Online data can get 'stuck', which is why you clear your browser.

This is not correct for 2024 taxes. if you enter an amount turbotax simply asks you if you overcontributed. It does not calculate what your contribution limit is. This is very frustrating because Turbotax has all your info. It seems like Turbotax should inform you AFTER preparing your taxes (but before actually fillinig) what your contribution limit is, and at that time allow you to contribute and adjust your taxes. At that point Turbotax has enough info to tell you what your contribution limit is and you can make the decision.

Thank you for the response, but it doesn't explain the dramatic increase in the calculated penalty the second time around. And if nothing else, the use of the word "still" is incorrect if the penalty amount is changing. TT: You owe a $25 penalty Me: Enter data to try to reduce the penalty TT: That doesn't reduce it, you still owe $293 Me: Reenter the exact same data a second time TT: That doesn't reduce it you still owe $464 So I'm letting California calculate it since their answer is definitive anyway, but I still don't trust TurboTax's calculation.
