The information says I can setup up to 5 returns under one email.  I am trying to add an account for my deceased mother to file her last return.

That makes some sense. We are filing three, and I was able to find two of the missing files in the backup drive, but not the third one. This is so crazy. When you close the program, in mac at least, you are prompted as to where to save it. So I always save it under Turbotaxfiles and a subfolder for the year (i.e. 2024 for this year). It has always worked...but even the 2023 files had to be searched out in the backup drive. Something happened with the latest TTax update that erased files.

No, you really don't need to do anything else. A Form 1041 is  not required since there is no income. You can just let it go, or you can file a blank form as first and final which would also cancel the EIN. No wrong decision as long as the estate has no income.

Do you have the irs publication that states this so I can show my accountant?  Thank you! @NCperson
Can anyone confirm if by putting a higher number in Utah Amount compared to Federal Amount would trigger some issues?   thanks   @AmyC

In this case, I’ll wait until tomorrow to call again and see if there has been a fix. I was on call and screen sharing for two hours today to show the issue to TurboTax CSR. I looked it up, and apparently the integers of a SSN can overlap with someone else’s EIN as SSN are for individuals and EIN are for businesses. I won’t input the 9 integers into the EIN then, because the placement of the dashes matter in determining the payer’s entity. Unlikely, and can be chalked up to a input error but still. It would be a lesser evil as you say to delete the 1099-NEC form entirely and just report the whole income number as “Other” on the Schedule C, then keep the 1099 for your own records.  And the greatest good would be to use the TurboTax form with the SSN as an SSN but print it out and mail it in with a check, since the system keeps tripping up and cycling on requiring an EIN. But the price tag on buying this online program was for convenience, so I’d rather not have to make a trip to the bank for a check and then to the post office to send with a tracking number.

Have you created the new account yet?   If you are signed into your TurboTax account, you should use the Sign Out function - from the left side menu, at the bottom of the screen.    Then on the sign-in page, select Create New Account.  You can use the same email address, you just need a new user id/password combo for your dad's return.  @mland    If you are unsure if you created the new account yet or not, you can find all the accounts created with your email by going through the steps in this article >>  How many TurboTax Accounts do I have?

I'm using the desktop version, mac (not that that seems to matter as there are PC users here with the same issue). The files were saved in a file on my computer, but they all disappeared except the pdf files. I managed to recover two files from my backup drive, but the third one seems to be lost forever.

When good information is presented, I would like to share it with my spouse and keep it for latter reference. Those are two good reasons to add this simple functionality. FYI I was a computer programmer for over 40 years, so I know this would be simple to add. Thank you for your consideration.

‌Here are the steps to indicate the rollover in TurboTax Online:   Navigate to Federal > Wages & Income > IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) Add/Edit Enter the information from the 1099-R, continue through the interview questions. Keep continuing though the interview. You will come to a screen that says "Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion." Select "I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days)" Please note, if the 1099-R has code G in box 7 the follow-up questions will be different. In this  case, say “No” to "Did you move this money from a 401(k) to a Roth 401(k)?" and "Did you move  the money to a Roth IRA?" to indicate a rollover. On the next screen, indicate the amount rolled to another retirement account.

I'm not a tax pro and still getting others to take a look, but technically it's 3 years from the date you filed the return, and not the due date.  Then, they have a lookback period of 3 years (plus extension if you automatically qualified as expat or applied for the october one) BUT they'll only refund you what you paid during the lookback period.  https://www.irs.gov/filing/time-you-can-claim-a-credit-or-refund If you filed a return 10 years after the April/Oct due date and made payments 2 years before filing, you'd still be able to get a refund from that payment.
