Thanks. That sounds fair. I wasn't planning to get the additional state plans for myself but now I realize I need them to help my kids. This is the first time I'm having my daughter fill out her taxes. She bought the NJ plan, then sent me her tax2024 file for review. When I tried to open it, it said error 190 and that I needed to download the NJ tax forms. I clicked "Download my state forms", and prompts me to buy it. That's not good. And I wasn't even interested in reviewing her NJ numbers yet, just seeing her IRS data. But I can't even see that until I buy and download the NJ tax forms. Did she buy it wrong? She used my credit card and TurboTax account when she bought it. Or was I supposed to buy it, then let her use it. How do I fix this just to see her numbers? Thanks.

I should say that I saw a post from earlier this year from someone asking about what to do when they were removing a vehicle from service. I'm not doing that so it wasn't clear to me if the advice given to them was applicable. So, to be clear: how do I calculate the "Prior Depreciation" that this is asking for? Do I need to fill out a Depreciation Worksheet by hand, and if so do I add up all the depreciations from the years since I place the vehicle into service up through 2023? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The extension gives you until October 15, 2025 to file your taxes without getting a failure to file penalty. You don't get extra time to pay your taxes so you must pay any taxes that you may have that are due by April 15, 2025 so you won't be assessed the failure to pay penalty. Refer to the TurboTax Help article How do I file an IRS tax extension?. If you need to file a state extension, review the article How do I file an extension for my personal state taxes?

Item "B" on the State and Local Income Tax refund Worksheet is the "Refund Amount"
If you took the Standard Deduction on your 2023 Tax Year Federal return, you can disregard the state refund. It is not reported, it is not taxable.
The reason is that if you Itemized Deductions, you claim state taxes paid. If later you get some of that state tax refunded, you may need to claim some or all of that refund as income.
When you take the Standard Deduction, you are not claiming State Tax paid as a deduction, so state refunds are not taxable.

For 2024 (tax returns typically filed by April 2025), the standard deduction amounts are $14,600 for single and for those who are married, filing separately; $29,200 for those married filing jointly and qualified widowers; and $21,900 for head of household.
For 2024, the additional standard deduction if you are over age 65 is $1,950.
The married filing jointly and qualifying widow(er) statuses have the same applicable tax rates and tax brackets. They also have the same standard deduction, which is higher than that for other tax statuses.

Ok...I'm sorry to press, I was just confused by this post where it says: "taxable amount ( this should be total distribution LESS any contribution that you had made over the participating years )" https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/re-us-switzerland-tax-treaty-and-timing-of-immigrant-status-for-swiss-pension-taxation/01/3614720 and this post where it says: "Unfortunately, contributions to Pillar 2 and Pillar 3 plans cannot be deducted and must be reported as income on a U.S. tax return. Some good news: because contributions to Pillar 2 and 3 plans are taxed, you won’t pay taxes later on when you withdraw money from these funds. Typically, once withdrawn, this money would be considered passive income and would not be included in the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, so that you would owe tax on withdrawals. However, because the contributions are taxed when made, you will only owe tax on growth, and Switzerland’s Foreign Tax Credit will offset this tax." https://help.taxesforexpats.com/en/articles/6573243-how-should-pillar-2-and-pillar-3-plans-be-reported-on-a-u-s-tax-return Which makes it sound like, since I declared the contributions already, I shouldn't be taxed on them again...
