Intuit Turbo Tax is very confusing about e-filing state tax. I completed the Return and elected to mail it in. Later, I decided to e-file. I went through the filing process until I got to the point where I purchased the State e-file option. Once I received the confirmation of my purchase, I assumed my previous selection to e-file would "grab" the State Return and file it. No such luck. After several days of not receiving notice that my return was accepted/rejected, I logged back into my file and saw the State Return had not been filed. You can do beter. Gary Jones

On a joint return, is it OK for both spouses to have the same PIN, or should they be different? Turbotax pre-filled in identical numbers for both my wife and me.

This is the second year in a row that we request a call (paying service) and wait for 30 minutes with phone in hand, and they call you, ring one time and they hang up. Like so the call counts for them and then you loose your queue and then need to enter again and wait another 30 to 40 minutes. This just happened. Last year was the exact same thing. They should make the support leave you a message or count the time that the call starts. They are doing this on purpose.

I don't see an issue as far as fair rent is concerned, since the tenant was only renting one room, so the rent for that room was probably fair. As far as deducting depreciation and expenses for the whole year, you should just consider the house rented for the number of months it was fully occupied. So you will only deduct depreciation and expenses for a portion of the year.

My mom also had Box E, noncovered securities with no cost basis submitted to the IRS, but the cost basis was on the 1099B I received. I was afraid I would spend another hour or so trying to pull out the 8 little wash sales and recalculating each group of sales, only to find out I had to send the 1099B because of the 6 sales marked with Box E. I got the impression I needed to send the 1099B tax statement because I was not able to import from Chase/JP Morgan, I grouped the 400+ sales into 3 entries and the box E issue. If it was just the wash sales I would have spent the time putting the trades in. I filed her taxes before I read your reply, and I am headed to the post office tomorrow to mail off her requested forms. You would have thought the IRS had all the information from Chase. I am not sure why Chase classified those 6 sales as Box E, they provided me with a cost basis, they managed my moms money.....poorly I might add..... so why didn't they report that cost basis. Her financial advisor refuses to answer my calls or emails because I withdrew all my inheritance from Chase so I will never know. Thank you so much for your reply.

IRS accepted my submission back on Sunday, the 6th at 1:30ish. I am not surprised I have not heard back yet. I got a used EV in '24 and had to report the $4000 credit the dealer took and I installed a charging station so applied for that credit as well. BTW, form 8911 is a PITA. The IRS has to know, by census tract where eligibility is. But no, there are these notices you have to decipher. Fortunately a CPA in the community looked up my census tract and worked out that I am eligible. Now to await IRS agreeing! So, at this point no news is good news wrt the PIN. I passed that barrier. Also, for 8911, as it is by census tract and there are TWO web sites to take your address and report back census tract, one would think this is a direct lookup function. TT should have been able to fill out all of 8911 for me after I supplied the installation costs and such.

Please clarify your question by providing some additional information so we may better help you. Such as: Are you filing a Tax return for 2024? Did you already file it? Has it already fully processed? Why are you amending your return? Did you live in Tennessee the entire year of 2024? Did you earn money in any other state other than Tennessee in 2024? Did you already file your state tax return? Are you trying to amend your state or federal tax return?

You really only need the desktop software if you need to take a home office deduction - See this help article, and use the instructions for the MADE the ELECTION option. That article has been updated since last year, so be sure to review it.
#1 - Yes, your activity should be reported on Form 4797 if you have made the election.
#2 - Yes - you can use Premier desktop to report your activity - and you can use Premier for the home office deduction (you can't do it with TurboTax Online, but any desktop product will work for you)
#3 - Desktop Premier is sufficient
#4 - I do not have examples, but I thought you mentioned you used Form 4797 last year - If so, you can refer to last year's return or search the Community.
#5 - Yes, you can file an extension now and file before 10/15. E-filing for 2024 ends in Oct and Form 3115 can't be e-filed with TurboTax. See Forms Availability
And there are no bots answering here in the Community (not yet anyway) 🙂

My elderly mother forgot to do her 2023 RMD and by the time I found out it was late December 2023. I tried but Vanguard's site constantly errored out, it took 2-3 days of attempts and I finally got the RMD to go through, but posted Jan 2, 2024. So I bought TurboTax Desktop and did her 2023 taxes, including a 5329, her taxes were zero since her income was so low. I made sure her 2024 RMD was done on time and now her Vanguard 2024 1099-R is about double what it should have been if Vanguard's site worked. How do I handle two RMD's hitting in 2024? Do I do something else or another 5329 because she had two RMD's in 2024? So far she now has a big tax due from extra income thanks to Vanguard blowing her income past the standard deduction. I want to lower her tax bill to what it should be. Thanks
