Your license code is a 16-character combination of letters and numbers (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) that verifies the software and allows you to finish installing and begin using TurboTax. See below for additional steps.   Enter your 16-character TurboTax license code (letters and numbers) on the activation screen during the software installation process. After running the setup file (either from CD or download), a prompt will appear asking for the license code. Type it into the designated boxes. If your TurboTax program is on a disc, you would need to install that disc on your computer to run TurboTax.    How to install TurboTax CD Make sure to insert the TurboTax CD into the CD drive on your computer. Hold down the Windows+R keys to open the Run window. Select Browse, and then find the TurboTax CD on your CD/DVD/RW drive (usually Drive D). Double-click the setup.exe file to begin the installation. If you have a PC and a Download file, follow these instructions:   Install TurboTax Go to InstallTurboTax.com. Select your product. Select your operating system. Locate and select your Download file to start the installation process. Accept the TurboTax License Agreement. Your product should automatically install after accepting the license agreement.    After installing TurboTax Desktop, you'll be asked to sign in to your Intuit Account.   To activate your installed software:  Sign in to or create your Intuit Account. If there's a blank screen instead of a sign-in option, or you're redirected to the sign-in page multiple times, go here if you have a Mac or here if you have Windows. If you have an account and are having trouble logging in, go to I need help signing into my Intuit Account. Enter your license code. Start using TurboTax. See this help article for additional information.

My 1099-R (Roth IRA) line 7 is listed as code J, the IRA/SEP/Simple box is not checked.  Line 2a is blank and 2b is checked.   A little Background the account is over 5 years old and I was under 59 1/2 years old when I took the distribution, however I am disabled and think therefore I meet the "qualified distributions" from IRS Pub 590B pages 25, 33, 34 (pg 34 flowchart Figure 2-1. Is the Distribution From Your Roth IRA a Qualified Distribution? answers yes, no, no, yes, conclusion "The distribution from the Roth IRA is a qualified distribution. It isn’t subject to tax."     Turbotax allows me to state I'm disabled and avoid the 10% early withdrawal penalty but it is taxing this distribution as ordinary income.   The following is from Fidelity web search If you are younger than age 59½ You can withdraw investment earnings without incurring penalties or taxes if your account meets the 5 year aging rule, as in, 5 years have elapsed between the beginning of the tax year of your first contribution to a Roth account and withdrawal of earnings. Your distribution must also be for a “qualified” reason, such as: You’re buying a home for the first time (you can withdraw up to $10,000 penalty-free) You’ve become disabled My problem, IRS Form 8606 Part III does not cover disability, rather it discusses basis. My withdrawal exceeds my basis. therefore leading my distribution to be taxable.   If I change my code from J to T or Q in turbotax it is not a taxable event.  But now my 1099-R from Vanguard (yes Vanguard) would not match my Turbotax entry and I suppose that could / would flag an audit. I'm getting a circular argument from Vanguard and Turbotax experts. Vanguard says under 59 1/2 we issue code J, your accountant can guide you on changes. Experts say, and I agree, we can't recommend you change a code that does not agree with the issuer as the IRS gets a copy of this too.  Turbotax online does not give me an opportunity to make a notation regarding my logic for the change.  The codes need to match Vanguard and Turbotax.   Conclusion, if disability status is a valid exception what code should it be? I'm guessing T. experts say Q is for over 59 1/2 and would not apply. Entering a code 3 Disability, makes turbotax charge me more in taxes?  What would you suggest I present to Vanguard to cover themselves to issue a corrected 1099-R?  I do receive a Form SSA-1099.  I don't want to pay ordinary taxes on this distribution if it is not necessary.    Thank you, that was long, I just wanted to avoid too many follow up questions.

We can tell you how to start a second desktop return, but first something needs to be cleared up.   Underneath your question there is a tag that says "Online TurboTax."   Please confirm what product you are in.   Online TurboTax requires a browser and has its navigation as tabs in the left column.   Desktop TurboTax does not need a browser during preparation, and the navigation tabs are horizontal across the top.   Did you actually install the software on your computer and used the desktop version for the first return, or did you end up in Online TurboTax by mistake?

@user17705090320 , all my red/ purple flags go up with this . (a) I do not believe that any legitimate US entity is going to issue a loan based on ITIN --- which is generally only for purposes of filing a return OR identifying/ withholding  taxes on investment/ passive earnings of an NRA.  I find this very surprising (b) In the process of confirming that entity's record of customer/client, you provided your SSN and DoB. Now that is available for usage.   What are they doing with that info ? (c) Did they actually send a 1099-C to the IRS ?   Without your SSN , it does not get connected to your  IRS account -- so why did they send it to you? For purposes of 2025 tax filing , you can ignore the whole 1099-C.  If IRS sees one with your SSN & name etc. then they will send you a notice--- you can then show them the letter from the entity. However, because you have now exposed your  SSN, DoB, Name  and address ----- you need to watch out for  abuse of the information.   Just keep a careful eye on all things financial. I may be totally and absolutely wrong and being paranoic ( and that this is perfectly  normal / legal entity ) but  there are so many tricks and games  out there  that I am leery of nay of these things.    Is there more I can do for you ?

I just got married in 2025 but I live in North Carolina and he lives in South Carolina. I have W2 income and he only receives disability income.  We each own a house in the state we live in and both of us have a child that we support.  In South Carolina, he is exempt from filing taxes as he is a disabled vet.  How should we file our taxes this year?
I think I had a similar problem with an import, so thanks for posting.  I'll await an expert reply along with you.

Reject code REJ001 typically means that the state return was rejected because the Federal return hadn't been accepted yet. Although you can e-file your federal and state taxes together, if you choose to e-file your federal first, you'll have to wait until that return has been accepted before you can e-file your state.   If there are no other error codes, and the Federal return has now been accepted, you should be able to e-file the state now. See this help article for information about filing the state after the Federal has been accepted.   If you are using TurboTax Online:    Sign in to TurboTax. On the Your 2025 federal return was accepted! page, open Your tax returns & documents, and then select 2025. Select Add a state to reopen your return. Note: If you've already started your state return, you can select Continue your return in the state tax return box. Select State from the menu. On the Let's get your state taxes done right screen, select Continue and follow the instructions.

In the Income section, scroll down to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, etc.  On the next page, scroll down to Other Reportable Income and enter Description/Amount.   Then, in the NY interview, enter it as a Subtraction from Income on Form 225.     The result on IT-201 shows the income on Line 16, and the subtraction on Line 31.   @aleanbh

W-2s were prepared with TURBOTAX, printed and mailed to SSA. No electronic forms or filing was used. This is for a small business, 3 employees. I reviewed the numbers but completely missed the W-2 stating 2024 vs the correct 2025. The W-2s read as 2024. All the back up forms read as 2025. At least last year, the forms had a "DRAFT" watermark on them warning you not to use them until finalized.
Won't let me enter in 2025 Desktop Edition either. What to do?
