Begin by contacting the ACA marketplace to report that an unauthorized application for benefits was filed using your credentials last year, a situation you have only recently discovered.    The marketplace will start an investigation. The process for getting a canceled Form 1095-A can take up to 45 days, which is longer than the tax filing deadline.    If you try to file electronically, your return will be rejected. File a paper tax return by mail, followed by a detailed explanation of these ACA-related circumstances.

Bank of America routing numbers are still a problem for TurboTax Deluxe for the Mac. This problem apparently has been known for a month and not fixed. It is preventing me (and others) from filing taxes electronically. TurboTax's response and help pages have offered a number of non-solutions with no commitment to actually fixing the software bug. This is a critical software failure, folks! Fix it!

You have several choices on how to handle this extra $1,000.   1. The simplest would be to apply to any medical bills that you had incurred since the HSA was created (when the first dollar went into it) that were not otherwise reimbursed by insurance. Yes, this is true even of expenses in previous years. You just need to document what you did.   In addition, the IRS is not clear about expenses in the near future; if you are planning to have planning work done or get eye surgery or whatever, this is the time to do it - again, document what you did.   2. Contact your HSA custodian and ask that they consider the withdrawal of excess contributions as a "mistaken distribution". Note that they don't have to do this, so be nice. You will have to give them the money back from the distribution, but then you would initiate a second "withdrawal of excess contributions", this time for the correct amount. Also ask them to calculate the earnings and to add that to the withdrawal.   3. The last choice is more problematic: split the 1099-SA that you receive into two forms. One form for the correct amount of the excess distributions and the earnings will have the distribution code of '2', and the second 1099-SA will have the $1,000 for the distribution and a distribution code of '1'.   Note that this latter 1099-SA will have the distribution added back to Other Income along with a 20% penalty. Hence try to do #1 or #2 if you can.     @um_goblue

If I were in the same situation and the income was not reported on a tax form (1099-MISC or 1099-NEC), then I would report it as Other Income not subject to self-employment tax.     You can certainly choose to report it on Schedule C if you wish.  The important thing is that you are reporting all of your worldwide income received for the year.     Reporting it on Schedule C does imply that you have a profit motive.  Reporting it as Other Income is simply adding it to your tax return because you received income from participating in a job interview process.  Your intent was probably to get the job, not attend an interview to make money.     @Nancy1010

It depends. It's important for you to know the rules on rental income if you rented less than 15 days.    Next, if you did rent more than 15 days, you will have to indicate you own the apartment to be enter the rental expenses and income, you will not enter any asset since you do not own the building or land.   NOTE: You are not required to report rental income from real estate if the days rented is less than 15 days.  This will not flag your tax return for the IRS.  Used as a home but rented less than 15 days.  If you use a dwelling unit as a home and you rent it less than 15 days during the year, its primary function isn’t considered to be rental and it shouldn’t be reported on Schedule E (Form 1040). You aren’t required to report the rental income and rental expenses from this activity. Any expenses related to the home, such as mortgage interest, property taxes, and any qualified casualty loss, will be reported as normally allowed on Schedule A (Form 1040). This happened to me and my transcript with the IRS says, Main Home in U.S., No.  I called Intuit to see if there is a way to fix this. They wanted me to share my browser, no thank you. He didn’t even ask for permission, just instructed me to click Cobrowse and I said flat out no. So then he said he’d send me an email but then I was disconnected. It was the correct TT number based on the recordings and holds and he had my email. In any case he never asked for my name or anything so I think it would have been a general email on updating your address. I have tried that through amending my return but the box is not there. The online chat just points me to the same thing.   So I called the IRS and after three transfers got somebody who told me he knows no way of fixing this. But he said it’s basically a computer glitch and the IRS doesn’t care. He said my main home address is in the U.S., I have my refund, he sees no reason for me to be audited and as far as the IRS is concerned, it’s all good. He says not to worry about an unchecked box.  I have to say that the IRS was much more helpful than TT, especially considering they are understaffed and absolutely swamped with calls, and I called them on April 7.

Your employer may have reported overtime paid to you but are you an employee:   exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act or  non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.   You must select I was not an exempt employee to qualify for the deduction.    Click on the hyperlink What's an exempt employee for direction.  Exemptions from the minimum wage or overtime standards of the FSLA may also be found here. Or you may have to contact your employer to determine whether you are exempt or non-exempt.   For the qualified overtime deduction:      Maximum annual deduction is $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers). Deduction phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers). The deduction reduces federal income tax liability, it does not exempt overtime pay from Social Security and Medicare taxes.  Employees will still owe these taxes on their overtime earnings. Taxpayers filing as married filing separately are not eligible for the deduction. The deduction is available for both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers. See this TurboTax Help.
