Need to amend 2023 tax due to the wrong calculation related to 529 withdraw

I already amended my 2023 tax once but now I realized another mistake which associate with my 529 withdraw. Can I amend the 2023 tax again?

Since there is no sheet of detailed calculation on the spending of 529 fund attached to the original tax form, I cannot tell where is the problem which led to an additional income from "excessive withdraw". But, I can show the calculation that I actually withdraw less than what I can. The question is how to make the amendment to show the correct calculation and what forms need to be modified in order to make the tax amendment.

You can amend an amended return.

I would suggest going in and adjusting the calculation on the return to match what you used for non-school-related expenses and then sending the return in by mail along with a letter of explanation.

The only amounts that should be entered on a tax return when you receive a 1099-Q are the amounts that are not spent on qualified education expenses.  The amount of the withdrawal that was spent on qualified education expenses should not even be entered on the tax return.

Need to amend 2023 tax due to the wrong calculation related to 529 withdraw

I used Turbox tax and the numbers were filed in by the Turbox tax and I don't see a worksheet with any calculation. Should I sing into my Turbox tax account and ask for help to start the amendment?

You should definitely sign in to the original return to review the calculation.

Have you received a letter from the IRS about this?  Or are you just worried about the calculation?

Need to amend 2023 tax due to the wrong calculation related to 529 withdraw

No letter from IRS.

I did not check the details when I file. But, when I check the details recently, I saw an extra income from the 529 distribution which led to penalty + additional tax. Since Turbo tax did not generate a worksheet, I don't know how the problem was generated. Now, I just want to make the corrections by file an amendment. Can I get the help to do the amendment from Turbo tax? I don't know what forms should be involved and how to do it using turbo tax online. I used online version.

Need to amend 2023 tax due to the wrong calculation related to 529 withdraw

Here's some information on how to amend your prior year returns.

If you use all of the funds from a 529 plan on education then you don't need to enter any information about the withdrawal into your tax return at all.

You can't get assistance with your 2023 tax return amendment.  TurboTax does have live assistance available if you need to amend your 2024 return, though.

Turbox tax helped me for the first amendment for 2023 tax in January. Why cannot help with the second amendment for 2023 tax?

Because in January 2023 was still the current year.  Now, 2024 is the current year and 2023 is the prior year.  Live support only helps with current year issues,

Here is information on what TurboTax Live Support is able to help with.
