Health care deduction

Where in Turbo Tax do I enter my Federal Tax Exclusion for health insurance premiums for retired public safety officers?  Does Turbo Tax calculate this?  IRS pub 575 applies.

Health care deduction

Yes.  TurboTax will ask you about that when you enter your 1099-R.  Eligible retired public safety officers can exclude up to $3,000 from their taxable income each year for health insurance premiums.  To be eligible:

You must be a retired public safety officer, which the IRS defines to include:

  • Law enforcement officers,
  • Firefighters,
  • Chaplains for these departments,
  • Members of rescue squads or ambulance crews.

You must have retired due to age/normal retirement or disability.   The exclusion applies to premiums paid for yourself, your spouse, or your dependents.
