Filing taxes while in a domestic partnership

My long-term girlfriend and I are thinking about entering into a domestic partnership.

If we choose to do so, are there any tax implications? When we file taxes next year, can we still file as Single and separately or would we need to file as Married? For context we live in a state with no income tax so my question would only apply for federal income taxes

Thanks!

Filing taxes while in a domestic partnership

You will not be considered married for federal tax purposes, so you will need to file as single or head of household if either one of you qualifies for that. You can't file as head of household based on your domestic partner, however. You would have to support a dependent.

You may be able to receive an "Other Dependent" credit if one of you supports the other and the one supported earns less than $5,050 in 2024. You can learn more about that in this IRS article:  Other dependent credit

You can learn more about domestic partners from the TurboTax article:  Domestic Partners
