After you get the program installed or reinstalled the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to File-New Tax Return).
Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.
BUT BUT. They do not support 2018. They only support the last 3 years. So you can not update it or download the state program or open your return.
why do you need to open it? You could try the TaxPrinter service (not connected with Turbo Tax) to convert a .tax file to pdf at
Hi, bbowie79,
I am so sorry to tell you that TurboTax does not support the state download for 2018. That is too far back. I am not sure how you purchased the 2018 version, as TurboTax is currently only offering desktop personal tax preparation software for prior years 2021-2023. Just in case you need it, here is the information to request a product refund.
If you need to change a return that far back, you may need to work with a tax pro. You have many options, including a verified tax pro.
If you didn't save a copy of your return and you are just seeking that information, may I suggest you request a transcript from the IRS? Here are instructions on how to do that. You can also request a copy of your federal tax return with this IRS form. If you are seeking a copy of your state return, many states can provide them if you reach out to your local state department of revenue (some state agency titles may vary).
Hope this helps.
