A question about receiving a payment of social security that was due to a deceased parent

Are you asking about survivor benefits that are paid for the children of a deceased parent?

Do not enter the SSA1099 for your child on your own tax return.   Someday if the child has other income  (after school job, etc.) and is filing a tax return, for that tax year he will need to include the SSA1099 on his own return.  Until then, it does not get entered anywhere.

No I don't believe so.  The exact wording is "You will soon receive a payment for $X.XX because we owed money to a person previously entitled on this record who is now deceased."  They died 12/1/24 and my guess is that this might have been the december payment due to them?

The social security income would be reported on your personal income tax return.  The way social security is taxed, did not change.  There is an additional deduction available to those over 65 thereby lowering overall taxable income.

You will receive a SSA1099 for the Social Security benefit that is paid to you, and you will enter it on your 2025 tax return.

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

This sounds like it will be a one-time payment.  The payment might be a monthly amount that was payable to the deceased or maybe is the $255 death benefit payable to a spouse or surviving child---any questions about the payment itself should be asked of Social Security.
