I tried using TurboTax to file my 2024 taxes but this year tried filing as Married Filing Separately but it kept getting rejected. What should I do??? I know I owe!

A tax return that you are trying to electronically file can be rejected by the IRS for a variety of reasons, so if you tried to file and received a message that it was rejected, TurboTax should provide you with details on why the IRS rejected the filing. Sometimes the reject is easy to correct and resubmit the tax return - for example, if you entered your dependent's social security number incorrectly, the IRS could reject the return as the social security number and name of the dependent does not match Social Security Administrative records. That reject is easy to fix by reviewing the number and spelling of the name you entered into TurboTax, making any corrections needed, and then resubmitting the return. Once resubmitted, you will want to check to make sure the IRS subsequently accepted the tax return.
However, there are some returns that are more difficult to fix to be able to resubmit electronically - in those cases, you may need to change from electronic filing to printing and mailing the return to the IRS (and any state returns to the appropriate state as well). As an example, let's say you are trying to file a Married Filing Separate return, and the IRS rejects the return saying they already have a return on file for your social security number. In that case, you will not be able to fix the reject and resubmit your return, rather you would have to print and mail your return to the IRS for processing.
So, if you have received a reject on your 2024 tax return, take a look at the reason it was rejected. Then, go into your TurboTax account and either make the correction needed and resubmit electronically, or update your return to be paper filed, and print/mail the return. If you are not sure why the return is being rejected and/or how to fix, feel free to call us, and one of the Tax Experts at TurboTax can help determine what the reject reason is and can advise you how you can proceed with filing.
