Question

How do I retrieve last year's unfiled tax returns?

I prepared my tax and filed an extension for 2019, but forgot to file the actual return before the deadline of Oct 15. Now that I'm trying to file the return, TurboTax redirected me to 2020's tax return, and the Documents section allows me to download only my filed extension. Is there anyway I can retrieve the unfiled tax return too so I can file the return without redoing everything again?

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2019 returns is now permanently closed.  You had until midnight on Thursday, October 15, 2020 to finish and attempt to e-file; if your e-file was rejected you had until October 31, 2020 to make corrections and re-file. Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2019 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

This is utter and complete bull**bleep**.  How does anyone know that you will wipe away days of work?  No notice not guidelines. Not your place to make what appear to be moral judgements about late filing.   I will not be using your software again.  Complete garbage.

It's still there.  Are you asking about 2021?
How to Access prior year online returns
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/00/27010

If you can't get the side menus to open up to access the prior year..... You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2022 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2022.

Did you start it last year?  How to finish a return you started online,

And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Then when you file for 2022 you need to enter 0 for the 2021 AGI since you are filing 2021 late.
