You should continue to try to get a copy of the W-2 from your employer.

If you cannot get a copy of your W-2, then you may be able to file your return using a “substitute W-2” but you will not be able to electronically file your return.

Please take a look at the TurboTax articles below for additional information and advice.

You may try to download the W-2 from your employer but you generally have to have information on the W-2 form to complete the download.  See here.

If you cannot get a copy of your W-2, then you may be able to file your return using a “substitute W-2” but you will not be able to electronically file your return.  To do this, you would need have your final paystub from December and file using the numbers on that final paystub.  See here.

If you can't reach your employer

  1. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. The IRS will ask you for some info before following up with your employer.
  2. After notifying the IRS, you can either continue waiting for your W-2 or paper-file your return using Form 4852 and your last pay stub.
