How do I import or enter my W-2?

There are a few ways you can add your W-2 to your tax return in TurboTax:

  • Import it instantly from your employer

    • W-2s are released by different employers on different dates. You might have to wait until February for yours to be available for import.

  • Upload it from your computer

  • Snap a photo of it with your phone

  • Type it in manually

To import your W-2:

  • We need the Box 1 amount from your W-2 or the year-to-date (YTD) gross income from your year-end pay stub.

  • In some cases, we may need the Box d Control Number from your W-2, but only if your payroll provider requires it.

Select your TurboTax product and follow the steps to add your W-2.

  • We recommend importing your W-2 for highest accuracy.

  • If you’re unable to import your information, the next best option is to upload a copy. Select Upload to provide a PDF, JPEG, or PNG of your W-2, and we'll extract the data directly from the form.

  • If you still can’t provide a digital copy, you can always choose to type it in by hand or use the TurboTax mobile app to snap a photo.
