Depending on what your tax situation was last year, you might need to use new tax forms to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations that are now in TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition, include:

  • Student loan interest deduction
  • Retirement savings contribution credit
  • Education credits
  • Child & dependent care credit

If none of this applies to you, you can use the clear and start over feature.

Note: In TurboTax Online, you can erase your return and start from scratch as long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered.

Please see the two TurboTax FAQs below for more information.

With the response received on the schedule 1 no longer being in the free online edition, can I opt not to include the interest paid on a student loan  from my 1098-E?

You are not required to report student loan interest or tuition paid. It is up to you to weigh the benefits. If reporting it will save you more than the cost of the upgrade then it will be worth reporting. Otherwise, you do not have to report it.
