There is no "Student" filing status for federal income taxes. If you are under age 24 and a full-time student, you can still be claimed as a dependent by your parents. Even as a dependent, you may have a tax return filing requirement if any of the following apply.
- Your
unearned income was more than $1,050.
- Your earned income was more
than $6,300.
- Your gross income was more
than the larger of—
- $1,050,
or
- Your earned income (up to
$5,950) plus $350.
Finally, if you have earnings from self-employment of $400
or more, you must file a tax return and pay self-employment tax (the employer's
and employee's share of Social Security and Medicare taxes) on that income.
Returning to the matter of you being a student, if you are enrolled at least half-time for at least one academic period beginning in 2017, then you (or your parents if you are claimed as a dependent) will be eligible to claim one of the federal tax benefits for post-secondary education on your 2017 federal income tax return. For more information about these, please see IRS
Education Benefits Comparison Chart.
