What do I write for this: Did Your Aid Include Amounts Not Awarded for 2020 Expenses?

I received 25k in scholarships. My total costs were 32k, so I spent out of pocket about 7k for the rest of tuition and about 1k for books/materials.

The questions asks: How much of the 25k received in school scholarships was not designated for 2020 expenses?

I'm unsure what to put.

Do I put the 8k that I had to spend overall, since the scholarship didn't cover my entire expenses? Do I put the 1k in books/materials that my scholarship did not cover?

Thanks.

Since you used the whole 25k towards education expenses in 2020 you will enter $0 or answer the question "Did your Aid Include Amounts Not Awarded for 2020 Expenses?" with "no".

If some of the 25k was used towards other years than 2020 expenses then you would enter the amount here.

Answer no.  That question is not for your situation. It would apply if some of the scholarship, shown in box 5, was used for  either 2019 or 2021 expenses.
