Veteran college student 1098-T and status

A veteran student is trying to file his 2024 tax returns. He was separated from the Active Duty in August 2024 and has been in college since August 2024. His only W2 income is the active duty pay from the military between January and August 2024. He also received $2k Pell Grant. The post 911 GI bill paid all the college tuition and fee. He received a 1098-T form from his college with box 1 showing a number of $9k and box 5 the Pell grant of $2k. No other non-zero numbers on 1098-T.

Question 1: How should the 1098-T box 1 number $9k be entered for the 1040 tax filing? Should it be entered as $0?

Question 2: What should his status be, college student or active duty, for tax filling purposes?

Thank you for your help in advance!

If you served in the military for any part of 2024, you should check the box that you were active military duty in the My Info Section. That information is for TurboTax and isn't reported to the IRS or the state.

You should enter the Form 1098-T exactly as it is. Refer to the TurboTax Help articles Where do I enter Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement)?, Guide to Tax Form 1098-T: Tuition Statement and What Are Education Tax Credits? For additional information.
