Should we file separately in order for me to deduct student loan interest? I would be able to claim $5k in student loan interest if I file separately from my wife.

Actually, you won't be able to claim student loan interest at all... Student loan interest is not allowed by the IRS when your filing status is Married Filing Separately. If you can't claim the interest when filing jointly due to your high income, the benefit of the deduction is lost at this point, unfortunately.

Actually, you won't be able to claim student loan interest at all... Student loan interest is not allowed by the IRS when your filing status is Married Filing Separately. If you can't claim the interest when filing jointly due to your high income, the benefit of the deduction is lost at this point, unfortunately.
