Turbotax won't let me enter my 1098-t for my daughter (dependent)

Revisit the Personal Information section.

Review your daughter's information, make sure she is claimed as a dependent on your return. 

Then revisit the Education section and on the screen Your Education Expenses Summary screen, select Add A Student.

Thanks Maya -this was kind of a weird problem, and after calling Turbotax and getting help, I found out that the answer for this is to scan the 1098-T (instead of manually entering it), and it will pick up the student's name.

on your education expenses and summary page when I click on “add a student” so I can enter the 1098 t for my dependent it doesn’t give me an option to select my dependent if enters the info as if I was the one in school

Make sure you answered all questions related to your dependent correctly.

Go back to Personal Information and select Edit next to your daughter's name.

Make sure you answered the whole year for the time she lived with you even if she was away for college. Answer Yes to the question Did you pay for more than half of your daughter's living expenses in 2019?

I am having the exact same problem and it’s literally driving me INSANE! It doesn’t let me select a dependent it will only let me enter the information as if it’s for me. I read on another post to upload a pdf of the form and turbo tax will automatically apply it to my dependent but every time I try to upload the pdf it fails.

I did and she is listed as my dependent. I’m trying to amend my taxes because I forgot to add the form. It’s not letting me.

Let's verify facts.

• Your original return was filed and accepted?
• You have received your refund?
• If yes to both, you can amend.
• You are in the amend mode and are unable to enter the 1098T.
• The amended returns are not operational yet.
• You can check when the 1040X will be available here, Federal form availability.

Hi Hailey - scanning the actual 1098T was the only thing that worked for me.  Maybe you can get a better picture somehow?  I was on the phone with Turbotax for about 30 minutes, trying everything - then they suggested uploading the PDF and it worked immediately.

To enter your 1098T in TurboTax online use these directions:

• You should be signed in and working in TurboTax
• Click on Federal in the left-hand black menu
• Then click on Deductions and Credits
• You may have to click on More Deductions and Credits
• Scroll down to Education, click on Show More
• Click on Expenses and Scholarships (1098T)
• A couple of screens in click Add a Student
• Answer the questions on the following screens until you come to Your Education Expenses Summary
• Next to the name of the student, click on Edit
• Next to the name of the school click Edit

I answered both of these questions correctly and still when I click on Add a Student, no option to select a student appears on the screen.  I tried entering my son’s 1098-T information in hopes that I could edit the student name later, but that option was also not made available.  Very frustrating!  There is a glitch in the Turbo Tax software.  Please fix, Turbo Tax.  I’m sure many others are having this same problem.

@rswierc these  “Experts” replying haven’t encountered this issue and are most likely reading off a script. They keep saying to add a student but that’s the problem - TT won’t let you.  The only way to fix this is to go to the actual forms and manually enter the information on the 1098T. When you return to the interview the info will pop up.

There is a glitch in the software.  To bypass it, delete your own 1098-T and add your dependent’s first.  Then it will allow you to select yourself second and add your own 1098-T.

I spoke with a very competent individual at Turbo Tax today.  He took the time to not only understand the problem, but to figure out how to bypass the glitch in the software creating the problem.   I posted the fix below.
