If I am using the online Turbo Tax version, how can I see the worksheets? My student's net qualified expenses for the AOTC are calculated as zero but I don't know why.

You cannot see the worksheets in the online version until you pay for the forms when filing.

But you should be able to see while you are entering information which credit it is calculating and why.

I recommend your reviewing your input as follows:

  1.  Go to the Federal section of the program
  2.  Select "Deductions & Credits"
  3.  Select "Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T)" and click start

Make sure you select "Edit" next to your child's name so you can enter your 1098-T information.

Input section

Continue through the screens and answer the questions as applicable. TurboTax will determine which credit you qualify for based upon your answers.

Calculation

After this screen, TurboTax will let you know which credit you qualified for as follows:

Credit selection

You should see the above screen as you complete your input.  This will explain which credit was taken and why.

I have attached a link showing you the different education credits/deductions which are available.

whose tax return are you putting the 1098-T on? should be the parents if the student is a dependent and Box 1 exceeds Box 5.

if you try putting the 1098-T on the dependent's return, the AOC will be zero as the dependent is not eligible for AOC.
