The Education Credit calculation done in TurboTax relies on the Taxpayer following the Step -by-Step order.
First entering all income
Entering Form 1099-Q
Entering Form 1098-T and all other expenses and financial assistance.
Completing the ENTIRE education interview.
If done out of order, the program COULD latch onto (too many) expenses for a credit.
If in doubt, type
letme
into the Search-Box
The program will take you to a screen that shows what the program is doing with the expenses and allows you to change the allocation if so desired.
Thanks sspuler for the workaround. I ran into the exact same problem everyone here is complaining about. It is clearly a program's bug that requires a manual patch. Note that you need to set the field to "0" and not just simply deleting it. Deletion won't work as it will repopulate the same faulty value back in place.
Thank you all for this topic ... I had to amend my return as I also totally missed the additional expenses incurred outside of tuition AND also had the automatically applied 10,000 credit which I do not qualify for ... this is definitely a system glitch which TurboTax needs to fix ....
This is an error that has been happening for years. I noticed the automatically $10000 on my student worksheet dating all the way back to 2016. They should have fixed this problem by now. Very frustrating that this is still an issue.
