In addition to 1098 T from my daughters school I also paid out of pocket for things like CNA class , stethoscope, cpr class (these things were all required by school as step to get into nursing school). She is enrolled full time. I have 1471.00qualified tuition and expenses on 1098-T. I also have roughly 1100.00for those other expenses I mentioned. Can I also claim those other expenses. A little confused because the way it works is she has to take all of these classes first before getting into Nursing program so technically she is not in a degree program at the moment. Can i claim these education expenses on my return.

For tuition, you can only claim tuition paid to an eligible educational institution.
Other eligible expenses also include student activity fees you are required to pay to enroll or attend the school. For example, an activity fee that all students are required to pay to fund all on-campus student organizations and activities.
For AOTC only, expenses for books, supplies and equipment the student needs for a course of study are included in qualified education expenses even if it is not paid to the school. For example, the cost of a required course book bought from an off-campus bookstore is a qualified education expense.
Please read this IRS document for more information.
it is an eligible institution as I have a 1098-T. Hard to tell what you are referring to with your answers. so I am guessing the comment might be for the additional classes like CNA? The article you linked to stated the following. non-credit courses do not qualify for the education credits or tuition and fees deduction, except when the course or activity is part of the student’s degree program. The courses are part of the program because it is required to take first before entering the Nursing program.
Q. Can i claim these education expenses on my return?
A. No. If those expenses were paid before she enrolled in nursing school, they would not qualify unless CNA/CPR class was at another "eligible institution" and she was half time or more.
You could claim the $1100, if those expenses were paid while she was enrolled in nursing school, even though they were paid to some other entity (not the nursing school) and even if the other entity was not a eligible school, because they were required.
Okay so this is really confusing. The school is the same school. However how this program works is you have to take about half of your classes first. the non nursing classes. and cpr etc. Once those are all completed then you can move into the actual nursing classes but its broken up into these two parts. All classes are taken at the same institution.
In that case, it all counts (1100 + 1471 = $2571), since it was part of the same curriculum and done in the same year. In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 1. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid ($2571)
I just checked with my daughter and its sometimes called pre nursing. she says she is listed as associate in Nursing at the community college?
Thank you so much for these recommendations! The cost of education can sometimes be large, and I felt it when I was in college. I worked to provide my own college education.
