Qualified education expenses. Is English as a Second Language tuition a qualified education expense?

My wife was enrolled in an Accredited University (Arizona State University) and attended 8 weeks of an English as a Second Language program. Can I claim the tuition an fees as a qualified education expense?

Since the course was taken at an accredited university,  the cost of the course may by eligible for the lifetime learning credit.  Please see  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/education-credits-aotc-llc  for more information.

Note:  Deductions are only available in the year that you paid the expense.  You will not be able to claim a deduction for this in a later year.

Other possible ways of taking a deduction (if you do not qualify for the education credit for some reason):

Were you starting a new business venture?  If so, you will take this deduction on Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business (Sole Proprietorship)), even if you had no income during 2016.  (You will need TurboTax self-employed if you use the online version).

Was this course required for your employment?  If so, see below:

Expenses directly related to employment may be deductible as job-related expenses.  Unreimbursed job-related expenses are deductible on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) and are subject to the 2% floor for miscellaneous itemized deductions.  To input your job-related expenses (TurboTax Deluxe edition or higher is required to file itemized deductions):
