Since the course was taken at an accredited university,  the cost of the course may by eligible for the lifetime learning credit.  Please see  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/education-credits-aotc-llc  for more information.

Note:  Deductions are only available in the year that you paid the expense.  You will not be able to claim a deduction for this in a later year.

Other possible ways of taking a deduction (if you do not qualify for the education credit for some reason):

Were you starting a new business venture?  If so, you will take this deduction on Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business (Sole Proprietorship)), even if you had no income during 2016.  (You will need TurboTax self-employed if you use the online version).
