NY State 529 TOTAL contributions for all years - no longer asking in TurboTax 2023

In all previous years, TurboTax asked for the total of ALL of the years contributions made to my grandkids NYS 529 accounts as well as the single calendar year in question for the deduction.  So, I kept a running total from day one.   In the TurboTax desktop for tax year 2022 ("TurboTax 2023") I entered my annual deduction to receive the state credit, but I didn't get asked during the State interview process for the continuing sum, nor did I see the matrix that was previously in TurboTax listing all the contributions.

Did I miss something, or did they eliminate the need for this which I could never quite understand the need for to start with?

(More curious than anything else since I never understand the need for this info since the state should have it based on all my tax year's returns previously filed with such annual deductions.)

NY State 529 TOTAL contributions for all years - no longer asking in TurboTax 2023

AndrewQQ,

Don't know the answer but:

In https://www.nysaves.org/home/why-ny-529-direct-plan/grandparents.html  there is a note that such contributions could exceed your annual gift tax exclusion with an alternative 5-year contribution method.  Perhaps TurboTax had been informed of that election and the 5 years are up?  I do suggest looking at the 529 plan document for details.

Thanks for the pointer. I do see the words "...that allows you to treat a single $90,000 contribution ($180,000 for married couples) as if it were made over a 5-year period."   I wish I could say that it would be an issue for me that I could give $90K in a single chunk  🙂

I might have mentioned that this really was more of a curiosity rather than a firm question I needed an answer to. I would assume others might also find it interesting to know.

In TurboTax for tax year 2024, I left the space blank and hit continue.  The next screen had a table of all my previously entered 529 contributions.
