To enter, edit or delete Education Expenses -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Education
  • On Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T), click on the start or update button

Or enter education expenses in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to education expenses

If you are a dependent or can be claimed as a dependent you are not eligible to claim any education expenses.  The person claiming you as a dependent would enter the education expenses on their tax return.

What are you trying to accomplish?  Get the stimulus payment or a tuition credit or both or something else.

Under the CARES Act, if you are claimed, or qualify to be claimed, as a dependent on someone else’s return you cannot receive a stimulus check, in 2020.   If you qualified as a dependent for 2019, but will not be for 2020, you will most likely get it in 2021, by filing a 2020 tax return.  Note that it isn't whether you  are actually claimed as a dependent, only that you qualify to be claimed as a dependent.  If you don't have  a W-2, that's an indication that you still qualify as a dependent.  But, that alone, does not determine that.

There's a old urban myth among college students that says they can get a $1000 from the government just for filing a tax form. For most of them, they simply aren't eligible. A full time unmarried student, under age 24, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working. You cannot be supporting yourself on parental support, 529 plans or student loans & grants. You usually must have actually paid tuition, not had it paid by scholarships & grants.  It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.

You cannot claim a credit if you are, or can be, claimed as a dependent by someone else.
