There are various reasons why you may not be eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit. Listed are the requirements that you must meet to qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit. The student must be enrolled/taking courses at an eligible institution, working towards a degree or credential to get or improve job skills, and be enrolled for at least one academic period.

I didn't get the education credit either! No matter what I entered for qualified tuition/expenses!
The program kept saying it was because I? /my son? was claimed as a dependent on another tax return, or we did not have enough expenses ?! Something is wrong with this program!!! Help!
You qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit if all of the following are true:
In addition, the credit is non-refundable. That means the credit can reduce your income tax to zero, but does not increase your refund if your tax is already zero.
If you look at the second page of your 1040, your total income tax appears on line 18. If that number is 0, your Lifetime learning Credit is limited to 0.
