I am a graduate student. Can I deduct my computer expense? It was required for the program, purchased outside of school.
Based on the information in the articles below, a computer required for your course and not purchased directly from your school may qualify as an education expense if claiming the Tuition and Fees deduction or the American Opportunity Credit, but not if you are using the Lifetime Learning Credit.
You should enter the amount for the computer in the education section of your return and TurboTax will take it into account when showing you the options for claiming your education expenses on your return.
