How to determine first year of college?

Can someone please clarify? The question of "is this "my child's" first year of school at a college or eligible school as of 1/1/20? She did not attend until Aug of 2020. Hubby and I are disagreeing on how it is reading?

It just means was 2020 her first year.  It's essentially irrelevant for tax purposes.  It just changes the TurboTax interview.
