If I paid money towards my student loan today, can I put this on my tax return? Or would it had to have been paid last year?

The interest you pay on Student Loans may be deductible.

You can only deduct what you paid in 2016.

A Taxpayer receives in January a 1098-E stating what can report as interest paid for the previous tax year.
