This is a question looking towards the tax year of Jan 1 2020 - Dec 31 2020. My income all comes from a national fellowship, and has nothing withheld, meaning I need to file quarterly taxes throughout the year. However, I also happen to be moving abroad in April of 2020, and will be here for over a year, meaning I can supposedly take a Foreign Earned Income Exclusion assuming I am out of the country for 330 days between April 2020 and April 2021. I am not sure how to both file quarterly taxes, while also qualifying for the FEIE. The company that distributes my fellowship has said we will receive a 1099-MISC form with that income listed on it, though the IRS website specifically says the 1099-MISC shouldn't be used to list fellowship income. Is my best bet to file quarterly taxes and pay them as I go, and then later to file an Amended Return? Since my income is a fellowship, and listed on incorrect forms (or potentially not at all), is there a chance I wouldn't be able to get my money refunded after submitting an Amended Return?

If you are not in the U.S. when the 2020 tax return is due, you are allowed an automatic 2-month extension to file your return and pay federal income tax if you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien. You can use the extension to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion so that you do not have to amend the return.
