F32 NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship 2022

I have a NIH F32 NRSA postdoctoral fellowship and receive a 1099-MISC for this income. It is taxable but not subject to self-employment or payroll taxes. I am not enrolled as a student as a postdoctoral trainee. I am having difficulty with how to enter this in turbotax for my 2022 taxes. In 2021 I entered it as other income and that seemed to work but this year Turbo Tax continues to think it is business/self-employment income. Should I be entering it in the education section as scholarship/fellowship income in excess of tuition, even though I am not enrolled as a student and didn't receive a 1098? Technically I am in a "fellowship" program at a university but I already have my degree. Thank you!

You can report it on line 8z of Schedule 1, as other income. Enter at the 1099-Misc screen. But, if you are someone’s dependent, it’s better if you enter it as Scholarship (it affects your standard deduction calculation)”. For step by step instructions see:

Thanks, I think the workflow for this has changed in this year's version of Turbotax. I am unable to enter this in the education/scholarships section because it appears to be requiring me to be enrolled in a degree program, which I am not. I'm also an NRSA postdoctoral fellow, so I have my degree but receive this income separately from my W-2 and it does not get federal withholding applied, but it is taxable income.

You have to use a workaround to get past "appears to be requiring me to be enrolled in a degree program".

After entering your 1098-T (if you don't have a 1098-T, answer that you qualify for an exception). That will eventually get you to a screen to enter scholarships not shown on a 1098-T.  When asked if  used for room and board, answer yes, that will get you a pop up box to enter the amount. That will make it taxable scholarship/grant/fellowship on line 8r of Schedule 1.

That worked for me - thanks!
