Does the 1098-T form go on the students taxes or the parents?

This is a full time student, age 20, only works during the summer, and still claimed as a dependent by the parent.

If you are claiming her as a dependent and qualify for the education credits, you should include the information on your tax return.

The real question is:

Q. Who claims the tuition credit, the student or the parents.

A. The tuition credit follows the student's dependency status.  If he is his parent's dependent, they claim the credit.  Otherwise, he claims the credit (with some caveats).

Q. Does the 1098-T form go on the students taxes or the parents?

A. It could be either, it could be both. If the parents are claiming the tuition credit, it is reported on their return.  If the student is reporting some of his scholarship as taxable, it is entered on his return.

Thank you!  I file an EZ for her job.  Does it have to be mentioned on hers at all or everything on the parent?

Q. Does it have to be mentioned on hers (the student)?

A. No.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your or your student's  tax return.

However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income. Or you may have a non qualified distribution from a 529 plan.  Only in one of those situations is it necessary to enter the 1098-T
