Can I claim my EMT course?

Hi.  I am a full time student.  My parents claim me as a dependent and take the tuition credit.  I know that I can’t take the credit (although I contribute $8000 toward the tuition) but I did pay an additional $1000 to take & pass an EMT course (plus paid for and passed the state licensing exam).  Can I deduct any of that?  I work hard and have three jobs.  Thank you!

Can I claim my EMT course?

You can claim this course if it maintains or improves your job skills, or is required by your employer or by law to keep your salary, status or job.

To claim educational expenses, you must be employed at the time of payment

Expenses to learn a new trade or job or to qualify for a new career aren't deductible.

To deduct this expense you must itemize deductions on Schedule A, and the sum total of your miscellaneous deductions including your educational expenses must exceed 2% of your Adjusted Gross Income.
