Can I claim an unpaid balance in my education section? And if not, how do I go about filling out this section?

If the unpaid amount is an out-of-pocket expense for tuition and fees, then you can't take credit for it until it is actually paid.

If you are talking about the unpaid balance on your student loan, then the federal government only gives you credit for interest you have paid.
