A cosigner paid interest on my student loan, the 1098E is in my name. Can I claim the deduction even though they paid? I was a dependent at the time the loan was made.

Parents are cosigners and make payments on my loan. I am not a dependent. Can I claim the interest since I am the primary name on the account? The 1098 E is in my name.

If you did not repay the student loan, you cannot claim the student loan interest deduction.

Your parents who are co-signers and actually repay the loan can claim the deduction, even if you are no longer their dependent.
