My wife is a graduate student, and received ~$5000 in tuition reimbursement (never actually received the money - it was deducted from tuition) for ra esearch assistantship. That amount was reported on a 1099-Misc, box 3. Per IRS pub 525 page 8, and IRS pub 970 page 9, this income should NOT be taxed. So how do you enter the MISC into TTax (as the IRS has this info), yet also enter a corresponding debit so that it does not drop down to the income line?

You can add it as other income and then back it out again with an explanation. "Incorrect 1099-MISC. Reimbursement"
