Why did I get a 1099INT for <$10 of interest?

I recently got a 1099 INT from my bank, for a checking account that earned a grand total of $0.17 of interest. I have never received a 1099INT for this account before, earning roughly the same amount. Why would they have bothered sending this, since I wouldn't owe any tax on $0.17 of income anyway?

They are required to send 1099-INT is they pay $10 or more.  There is nothing that says they cannot send for a lesser amount.  You can ask your bank that question.  Since you received the 1099-INT, you need to report it even if is for such a trivial amount.

computers.  it's just as easy to program a computer to send out the tax forms to everyone as to those where the amount is $10 or more.    round to whole $'s and you don't have to enter it.  the IRS is not going to bill you for the omission of $ .17.    as a matter of fact, the IRS allows the rounding of all amounts on the return.   professionals usually do this.
