I'm going to assume you are preparing a Virginia return, if you are preparing a return for a different state, please respond in this thread.
While in your Virginia return, please follow these steps:
I am using the Maryland return. This situation does not pertain to me but it says I need to complete it and it should add up to a specific amount. Is this a bug? Or is there something from the federal form that indicates the need for completion.
It depends. There should have not been any reference to this in your federal return because this is a state specific issue. It may have been triggered in your interview by a question that was answered erroneously.
To check this, go to the state taxes tab in your return or go to state. Scroll though the screens in your state return until you reach a screen that is entitled, Let's Take a look at Maryland Credits>other Credits>Credit for preservation and Conservation Easements. Click on start or update.
If there is an entry here delete it, If not try to delete your Maryland state return and then reenter it to see if this will clear this entry out.
