I am having trouble with the educational expenses. I received money from a scholarship. However, all this money went directly to tuition. It is not letting me put in the tuition and is trying to say I owe a bunch of federal taxes because of it. How do I show the tuition as an expense?

You are not eligible for any education credit if all your qualified expenses were paid with scholarships. What are the amounts in box 1 and box 5 of your 1098-T? You should be able to enter these amounts directly into TurboTax in the 1098-T section. Are you saying you can't enter them?  Are you claimed as a dependent by someone else?

If you have not filed, to enter tuition expenses, here are the steps (online):

  • Sign in to your account and select Take me to my return
  •  At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in 1098t and Enter
  • Select Jump to form 1098T
  • On screen, "Do you want to enter your higher education expenses?" answer Yes
  • Follow prompts

If your scholarship income covers all your tuition, you will not qualify for an education credit, but at least you should not owe any taxes for that.
