When entering a business mileage expense, how is the total dollar amount figured

The standard mileage rate for business travel in 2016 was 54 cents per mile. This is the rate used on the tax returns currently being filed.

The standard mileage rate for business travel in 2017 will be 53.5 cents per mile.
