I'm using the Turbo Tax Business program (not the online version) because I have 2 businesses. One business is in Tennessee, where it is required to file the state return electronically. Every time I file the return, it gets rejected saying I changed my Employer Identification Number. I DID NOT change the EIN. I even checked last year's return to make sure I entered it correctly last year (I did). How the heck am I supposed to file my tax return now?

What kind of business returns (Partnership, S Corp, C Corp, multi-member LLC, trust and/or estate) are you filing using TurboTax Business? The business returns have to be filed individually. There is no online version of TurboTax Business, so I am wondering if you should be using TurboTax Home and Business instead. Do you have separate EINs for each of the two businesses?
Home and Business is a personal tax product that allows the filing of Schedule C (for single-member LLCs and sole proprietorships) to be filed along with your personal tax return.
It's a multi-member LLC. And I said that I am NOT using the online version. It's the business Turbo Tax that is downloaded and can only be used on a PC.
Yes, the two businesses have separate EINs. This is only concerning my Tennessee Business.
I'm just guessing on this, because I see this all the time with Hawaii business tax returns.
I note that TN has four distinct types of partnerships. Limited Partnerships, General Partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships and Limited Liability Companies.
Additionally, in those states that tax personal income and/or require businesses to file tax returns, that state will issue the business something akin to a state ID number. That's basically the equivalent of the federally issued EIN, but at the state level.
So it's possible that while the federally issued EIN may be correct, you may have the wrong state issued ID number listed. Could be as simple as having entered the federally issued EIN in the box that ask for the state issued ID number.
So if this applies, it's something you need to check.
You may be on to something there. Tennessee does have an FAE (Franchise & Excise) tax number. I'm going back through the return to see if maybe there's another place where that needs to be entered. Thank you!
