Self-employed, at some point in the process Turbo Tax said I wasn't eligible to defer self-employment taxes. Great, I didn't want to defer them. Filed my taxes, with my overpayment being kept for 2021 taxes.
Due to a mistake, I had the IRS amend my return and sent me a notice.
While trying to understand what they changed, I discovered that even though TT told me I wasn't eligible for the deferral, it left it in the forms and effectively deferred it.
I want to file an amended return, I can see that I need to remove a tax payment so that I owe, go back to the deferral section and set that to 0, and then re-add my payment. I then remove the designation to keep the overpayment for 2021 taxes, and instead of showing the correct amount for what I owe, it shows the entire deferred amount as owed taxes. I see in the amended forms the right numbers, but I have no idea what else TT is doing, and how it transfers that to my state taxes.
TT didn't handle this section well, although I know you didn't have much time to put it in. But now to amend the return isn't working right either.
Is there some sort of help beyond this message board, since this is a mistake that TT made in how it handled the deferral numbers?
