How much detail do I need to add in the Description & Amount form for expenses and other items?

TurboTax often gives me a small form in which I can add multiple line items as a description and amount. How much detail do I need enter? I can imagine three different ways to do this. For example, with business travel expenses:

  • Enter each flight, hotel and car rental on a new line.
  • Enter a total for each category - for example, one line for all flight expenses.
  • Enter just a grand total of all business travel expenses.

I do have documentation for every one of these items. I want to avoid entering every one separately if I can.

How much detail do I need to add in the Description & Amount form for expenses and other items?

Most enter the grand total for all business travel as one sum.  Which is much easier to do. 

The key however if you were asked how did you arrive at $XX on the return, you would have the breakdown showing this.  

Put them under the general expense if they fit, and if they don't put them in the Misc. area as in the picture you enclosed.
