Since you are reporting 0 business miles, you need to be reporting 0 total miles (since vehicle miles are not deductible personally).
>>> you need to be reporting 0 total miles
By using the same mileage # for beginning and end of year mileage reading, Total Miles =0.
The Smart Check produced no errors. The EoY mileage will be carried into next year's calculations.
Is this correct?
That is correct.
I am having the same issue as @pandora1988. We put our vehicle in service in August 2022 and originally entered 0 for miles driven between 1/1 and 6/30. When I run the Federal review, TT Home & Business alerts of an error that says, "Check This Entry - Schedule C -- Car & Truck Expenses Worksheet: Business miles should be blank. This vehicle was placed in service after 6/30/2022." It has a box to enter Business miles that is populated with 0, but it won't allow me to leave it blank. I am in a loop and the error won't clear. I went back into the form in the questionnaire where it asks Miles driven from 1/1 to 6/30 to remove the 0, but it won't allow me to do that.
On the Check This Entry screen, you will want to clear out the zero at the top, not down inside the form. When you clear it at the top, it will update the form. If this does not resolve the message, try going through the interview again in your Schedule C for this business, under Vehicle Expenses and then run it through Review again.
This is exactly what is happening to me as well. I didn't drive any business miles for the first half of the year and TurboTax won't let me e-file because it keeps making me review saying business miles should be 0. No matter how many times I look over and make sure it's correct, it will not let me continue filing. I am extremely frustrated at this point because it is the only thing preventing me from filing.
It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2022" data file for the return that is experiencing this issue. We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing, so we can determine what exactly is happening in your return and provide you with a resolution.
Please, also tell us any states included in the return.
And this is the Desktop/Download version of TurboTax, correct?
You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions for TurboTax Online:
Go to the dark panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
If you are using TurboTax Desktop, these are the instructions:
@Kylie1945
Doesn't that screw things up if you are claiming miles for medical purposes in deductions?
I think the correct option is to delete the business and schedule C entirely. If you did not receive a 1099 for the business, you had no expenses or income from it, there is no reason to do the worksheet other than that TT remembers you did one last year. So if you are in the part of the interview where it lists your businesses and has EDIT/DELETE to the right, delete the business from this years taxes and the useless schedule C will disappear with it.
If you didn't drive a vehicle during 2022 but may or already have again for 2023, it's might be easier to enter 0 across the board for miles and leave the worksheet there for next year. You can delete the form, but some people want it to be there for 2023.
And, business miles have nothing to do with deductible medical miles. You are not required to report anything about the vehicle when claiming miles as part of your medical expenses deduction.
I have the same issue as others and am using Home & Business, Desktop
Schedule C, Part 1 - Vehicle Information sample:
TurboTax Desktop "easy step" instructions say to enter zero if not driven.
Error is triggered at 6a, when running final review.
It would be helpful to have a TurboTax token. The token provides a sanitized version of your return. We will be able to see the numbers but not any personal information such as your name, SSN, or address.
If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
In TurboTax Online, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.
In TurboTax CD/Download versions, go to the black panel on your screen and select Online.
Reply to this thread with your Token number.
We will then be able to see precisely what you are seeing, and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
Thank you @BrittanyS
Token is: 1114450
Erase the 0 from the box and then click next so that the box is completely blank instead of containing the 0! That’s what fixed it for me after tons of frustration lol
