Good morning Heather.
Maybe you can shed some light on my issue related to this topic. Specifically, my Traditional IRA Basis did not transfer from my 2020 return to my 2021 return. This information is found in the worksheets, specifically the IRA Information Worksheet.
Our last Traditional IRA contributions were in 2016 and, of course, I have my Forms 8606 from 2016. Every year starting in 2017 (through 2020) TT notes our total basis on line 1 of part 1 of the IRA Information Worksheet. That worksheet is missing in 2021 when I download the pdf file.
Please look into this issue and advise.
Thank you.
Once you take the steps below you should see your basis populate in the return. Please update here if the amount does not populate automatically. Although the 8606 is not required to be filed unless there are current year nondeductible contributions, it's always good to keep a copy for your files to track the IRA cost basis (nondeductible contributions) until you are ready to take distributions.
To trigger the 8606 in TurboTax
For the 4 situations listed at the top of this article (click the link), you can trigger Form 8606 with these instructions:
Tip: On joint returns, 8606-T stands for "taxpayer" (first person listed on the return) and 8606-S denotes "spouse."
