software won’t let me enter a $25 non-employee compensation for a legal services plan trust without filling out schedule C which I was told I don’t need to fill out.

Instead of entering the 1099-MISC, Select Less Common Income, Miscellaneous Income. Then select Other Reportable Income and enter the description and amount. Enter something like 'Legal Services Plan in box 7' or something similar.

Delete the 1099-MISC if you have entered it elsewhere.
